Chiara Ortolani nasce a Todi il 25 Marzo 1986. Dopo la maturità classica si laurea in Lettere e Filosofia all’Università Roma Tre, dove frequenta il workshop di arti visive tenuto da Lino Strangis e il laboratorio di sceneggiatura tenuto da Marco Pettenello. Frequenta inoltre il laboratorio di Filmmaking tenuto da Giulio Reale, Adriano Tagliavia e Gianmaria Scibilia alla Scuola Act Multimedia di Roma. Si laurea in Regia, con una tesi in direzione degli attori, al biennio specialistico di Teorie e Tecniche dell’Audiovisivo dell’Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma. Nel 2009 viene selezionata per partecipare al corso di sceneggiatura e scrittura creativa RaiEri. Prosegue il suo percorso di formazione alla London Film School e successivamente al CSC Lab di fotografia tenuto da Giuseppe Lanci. Nel frattempo scrive e dirige diversi cortometraggi tra cui Decoupage – presentato nella sezione giovani al Todi Arte Festival 2013 -, Bride – presentato al PerSo, Perugia Social Film Festival 2017 – e War Rugs – presentato al Festival CinemaZERO di Trento 2017 e all’Umbria Film Festival 2018. Il suo progetto Conversation of Death è tra i finalisti del Capalbio Lab e del Premio Solinas Documentario per il Cinema 2018. Nel 2019 frequenta il corso di alta formazione in regia cinematografica tenuto da Marco Bellocchio. Con il progetto La Manza riceve la menzione speciale al laboratorio Fare un Film, realizzato dall’Associazione Fuori dal Pollaio in collaborazione con SIAE, Regione Lazio e Marechiarofilm.

Chiara lavora come regista e sceneggiatrice. I sui lavori si esprimono con un uso di una finzione onirica e una realtà sporca che trascende nell’illusione. Alterna lavori di pura finzione a realizzazioni documentaristiche, restando comunque anche in queste ultime in bilico tra realtà e immaginazione, raccontando una società spesso inosservata, che trae la sua forza dalla terra e dalla natura più selvaggia. Grande attenzione viene posta sugli attori e la componente musicale. “Le bestie” e l’animalità, sono per lei elementi chiave nello sviluppo dei suoi progetti.

Chiara Ortolani was born in Todi on 25 March 1986. After her maturità classica high school diploma, she graduates in Literature and Philosophy at the Roma Tre University, where she attends the visual arts workshop held by Lino Strangis and the screenwriting workshop held by Marco Pettenello. She also attends the Filmmaking workshop held by Giulio Reale, Adriano Tagliavia and Gianmaria Scibilia at the Act Multimedia School in Rome. She graduates in Direction, with a thesis on directing actors, from the two-year MA Teorie e Tecniche dell’Audiovisivo at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. In 2009, she is selected to participate in the RaiEri screenwriting and creative writing course. She continues her training at the London Film School and later at the CSC Lab of cinematography held by Giuseppe Lanci. In the meantime, she writes and directs several short films including Decoupage – presented in the youth section at Todi Arte Festival 2013 -, Bride – presented at PerSo, Perugia Social Film Festival 2017 – and War Rugs – presented at CinemaZERO Festival in Trento 2017 and at Umbria Film Festival 2018. Her project Conversation of Death is among the finalists of Capalbio Lab and Premio Solinas Documentary for Cinema 2018. In 2019 she attends the advanced training course in film direction held by Marco Bellocchio. With the project La Manza she receives a special mention at the Fare un Film workshop, organised by the Associazione Fuori dal Pollaio in collaboration with SIAE, Regione Lazio and Marechiarofilm.

Chiara works as a director and screenwriter. Her works are expressed through the use of dreamlike fiction and a dirty reality that transcends into illusion. She alternates between purely fictional works and documentary productions, however, even in the latter, she remains poised between reality and imagination, recounting an often unnoticed society that derives its strength from the earth and the wildest nature. Great attention is paid to the actors and the musical component. “Beasts” and animality are key elements for her in the development of her projects.
